While we have divided Anchorage into different sections, it is important to note that everything is close within Anchorage. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and has all the amenities of living in a city, yet it is a city where it is easy to get from one place to another within 20 minutes by car.
Alaska Railroad Depot is downtown. Also Ship Creek and its salmon run has many people out fishing during the summer--some in their business clothes during lunch time.
Within the downtown section of Anchorage you will find museums, fine dining and shopping. The Anchorage Museum of History and Art at the Rasmuson Center, the Alaska State Trooper Museum, the Russian Orthodox Museum are just some of the museums. The Anchorage Visitor’s Log Cabin is a great place to get information about Anchorage. The log cabin is the start of the self-guided walking tour. Among the things you will see on the tour are the Oscar Anderson House and the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. On summer weekends the Saturday and Sunday Markets offer unique shopping experiences for both visitors and locals.
Many fine restaurants are located in the downtown part of Anchorage. Some are Simon and Seaforts, Marx Brothers, Corsair, Club Paris, Orso’s, Sullivan’s Steakhouse, Glacier Brewhouse, Sack’s Café, Sweet Basil Café, Snow Goose, Crow’s Nest, and Phyllis’ Salmon Bake. |
